MUSIC NEWS: Mike Portnoy Updates Us On His New & Upcoming Projects

Mike has "a few things up his sleeve."

If you ask me, those are some bad-ass sleeves. He's all over the map: Beatles tribute band with old friends in Yellow Matter Custard, just off the road 3 months ago from a long trek with Avenged Sevenfold, and now he's cooking up something special with some of the most talented artists in the metal & Prog rock world of our decade.

The project he mentions that gets me so excited is the current work he's doing with Russell Allen (Symphony X, Atomic Soul) & highly acclaimed "guitar hero," Mike Orlando (see 3rd video below).

Mike on the road w/Yellow Matter Custard
Now, if you're an old school Symphony X fan like myself, you know precisely the amount of awesomeness this news entails! Just the IDEA of hearing R. Allens amazing vocals aside Mike's extremely talented guitardedness & Portnoys' sic double bass drums is unprecedented & truly exciting!  I do realize, some of you may be thinking "who the hell is that?" so I'll try to paint a picture for you;

Imagine one of the most metal, dynamic, bad-ass drummers you've ever witnessed on a stage joining forces with the MOST talented, diverse singer/songwriter you've EVER listened to. Now take that pair of astounding performers and throw in one timeless, indescribably awesome guitar player and you have yourself a pretty damn good band to look forward to this year!

With each update from Mike, I'm leaning more towards the "...& another door opens" ideology now with regards to how things are moving along!

Remo Drumhead Selection & Testimonial from Mike:
Mike talks about the REMO drumheads he uses, why he prefers them, which ones he uses for which styles he plays...

"Remo has every sound & feel for any project you could be doing...in summary, Remo gives great head!"

LOL!

For those of you that are intrigued by this project Mike's doing with Russell Allen & Mike Orlando, but don't know much about his partners in crime, these next 2 videos may shed some light on the reason behind my eagerness for what's in store for us this year!

This is what Mr. Orlando does with his free time.

Russell Allen has a voice that is like no other, in my humble opinion. His live performance w/Symphony X (years ago at The Rave, Milw) blew me away.
Very much looking forward to the May 1, Chicago, IL tour date for Symphony X
